60 years ago today Paul McCartney met John Lennon

July 6, 2017

A course in history was set in motion 60 years ago today, July 6th, 1957, when Paul McCartney and John Lennon were formally introduced. We say formally because Paul had seen his future bandmate around Liverpool, where they both lived.

With a heat wave engulfing northern England, the meeting took place at the annual Woolton Parish Church Garden Fete, a parade and outdoor fair, where Lennon and his group, The Quarry Men Skiffle Group, were performing. A 15-year old Paul was in the audience and was introduced by their mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan, who was born the same day as Paul -- June 18th, 1942.

The rest, as the saying goes, is history as they went on to form the most successful songwriting partnership in the world, and a band -- The Beatles -- that changed music and culture forever.
